Best Credit Report Repair Tips - The Devil is the Details!

When people ask me to give them the #1 best tip I have for self help credit repair, I only have to think for a fraction of a second before I give them the easy answer: The devil, is in the details. Usually they will look at me strangely for a second, and wonder how in the world a seemingly random clich is going to help them fix their credit score and move their lives in a forward direction. It really is quite a simple explanation.

In reality, most of the stuff on your credit report is true. The time that you didn't pay your Visa credit card bill for three months? It most likely had nothing to do with that humanitarian work you said you were doing with the Peace Corps, but rather you decided to quit your 3rd job in 9 months to go road tripping with your friends. Now, I don't say that to be mean, or accusatory, but very simply, most people who have bad credit earned it the old fashioned way: By not paying their bills. That's how my credit score dropped at age 25 to a 525.( which means I was more of a credit risk than the three guys running Enron in 2002 ) Of course when I called my credit card companies to protest the account being charged off and placed for collection - I told them I was in India studying the evolutionary cosmology of Sri Aribindo with the hope of making the world a better place. In reality, I spent the summer following a cheap knock off Grateful Dead tribute band on a 14 city cross country tour. I'm sure they didn't believe me then, and they certainly don't believe YOU now.

So what are we to do? Well, like I said - the devil is in the details. The law says, you are entitled to a credit report free of errors. And you can have a nasty, negative charged off account glaring back at potential future lenders who look at your report that is true in it's broad strokes, yet, the small elements are wrong. The dates are off, ( VERY common) the amount is wrong ( DITTO) and sometimes your personal details are so wrong that it's a surprise they even managed to mail the bill to the right address at the time. These small bit of information, folks - are the foundation for a ferocious dispute. Because AGE of a derogatory item on your report is so important, that your CONGRESS actually included a revision in the recent amendment to the FCRA ( the acronym for the Fair Credit Reporting Act) to specifically deal with exactly when the clock starts ticking for a bad debt to be purged from your report.

Remember when you were in high school and the teacher told you that there are no dumb questions? Well, actually - she lied. There are LOTS of dumb questions. But there are no details too small on your credit report to study for accuracy. None. The bureaus have an obligation to get it right. You have an obligation to make sure they do. And if you care about your credit score, you will make sure you do.

With the right information, everyone, including YOU, can fix their credit, quickly, easily and ethically with a minimum of muss or fuss. Don't let them tell you its too expensive, or too hard - it's not, self help credit repair is actually the most AFFORDABLE investment you can make in your families future!
